LNG Tankers to U.K. Rise; Kuwait and Italy Await First Cargoes
By Ben Farey
July 31 (Bloomberg) -- The number of liquefied natural gas tankers sailing to the U.K. increased in the last week before an intensification of North Sea field maintenance in August, ship-tracking data show.
Tankers sailing to Britain, Europe’s biggest gas market, climbed to four from three a week ago, according to AISLive data compiled by Bloomberg.
There may be as many as six LNG carriers heading to the U.K. now. One of them, the Arctic Princess, does not show the U.K. as its destination. Another, the Umm Slal, gives an arrival date of July 7.
OAO Gazprom bought a cargo of LNG from StatoilHydro ASA and sold it to Petroliam Nasional Bhd. of Malaysia to import into the Dragon LNG terminal in south Wales.
The cargo is loaded on the Arctic Princess, Frederic Barnaud, LNG director at the U.K.- based unit Gazprom Global LNG, said over the phone.
Kuwait is to receive its first delivery of LNG next week at an import facility built by Excelerate Energy LLC.
The tanker Sohar LNG will arrive in the Gulf state on Aug. 4.
A second ship, the Grand Elena, is scheduled to arrive on Aug.
9 from OAO Gazprom and Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s Sakhalin-2 plant off Russia’s east coast.
Exxon Mobil Corp.’s Italian LNG terminal will receive its first cargo next week, according to partner Edison SpA.
“It’s the first time, the first cargo,” Stefano Amoroso, a spokesman for Milan-based Edison SpA, said today by telephone.
Signals today were captured from 148 vessels, 2 fewer than on July 24.
That’s 48 percent of the global fleet of 310 LNG carriers.
The following table lists by country of destination all the LNG tankers
that have transmitted a time of arrival within the next three months, including today.
LNG is natural gas that’s cooled to a liquid for transport.

Citi to buy LNG cargo to Trinidad
Date: 2009-08-09 03:21 pm (UTC)Citi to buy LNG cargo to Trinidad
Freight News | August 9, 2009 |
Citigroup Inc entered the game of buying spot cargoes of liquefied natural gas this month, winning a tender for a cargo from Trinidad loading around Aug. 20, sources close to the deal told Reuters on Thursday.
The move comes as new LNG production is set to come online while demand
for the super-chilled gas remains slow, leaving more spot cargoes on
the market for intermediaries such as Citi to buy.
A flurry of tenders for cargoes from Trinidad this month has attracted
players like Citi and Morgan Stanley who can load the cargoes aboard
chartered tankers and sell them into attractive-paying markets
elsewhere in the Atlantic.
While Citi is not new to the LNG market as a whole — it has banking
activity in liquefaction projects and the ship lending business — the
cargo-purchasing activity is new, and set to continue.
“By developing its capabilities in this market, Citi is better
positioned to help its clients more effectively manage their risks in
the developing global natural gas market,” Citi’s Co-Head of Global
Commodities Stu Staley told Reuters.
Sources say Citi is weighing up options for the cargo, one of which
could be a sale of the cargo later in the year to higher-paying winter
markets in northwest Europe, though Citi declined to comment.
Europe has taken the lion’s share of LNG this year as demand in Asia
fell, leaving more left over in the Atlantic Basin. The U.S. has
imported far less than was widely expected, with prices, pressured by
over supply, remaining largely unattractive to shippers.

ExxonMobil Announces First LNG Cargo at Adriatic Terminal
Date: 2009-08-13 07:10 pm (UTC)Monday, August 10, 2009
Exxon Mobil Corporation has announced that the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo arrived at the Adriatic LNG regasification Terminal located offshore of Porto Levante, Italy aboard the LNG carrier, Dukhan.
Terminale GNL Adriatico (“Adriatic LNG”) is owned by Qatar Terminal Limited (45 percent), a Qatar Petroleum subsidiary, ExxonMobil Italiana Gas (45 percent) and Edison (10 percent). The Terminal is the first offshore Gravity Based Structure in the world for unloading, storage and regasification of LNG. It utilizes ExxonMobil proprietary technology and is designed around a large concrete structure, which houses two LNG storage tanks, a regasification plant, and facilities for mooring and unloading LNG vessels. When it reaches full operational capacity later in 2009, the Adriatic LNG Terminal will be able to deliver 775 million cubic feet of natural gas per day (8 billion cubic meters per year), or approximately 10 percent of Italy’s current natural gas requirements.
“ExxonMobil is a global leader in developing and delivering advanced LNG technology,” said Neil Duffin, president of ExxonMobil Development Company.
“ExxonMobil is proud to partner with Qatar Petroleum and Edison in developing the Adriatic LNG Terminal that will increase Italy’s LNG import capacity and provide cleaner-burning natural gas to help meet consumer demand. Through advanced technologies, project execution expertise, and economies of scale, ExxonMobil is extending its ability to bring global LNG supplies to Italy and elsewhere around the world.”
“The Adriatic LNG Terminal will further expand Qatar’s global reach and provide a diverse and secure energy supply for Italy,” commented Saad Al-Kaabi, Director Oil & Gas Ventures for Qatar Petroleum and Chairman of Adriatic LNG. “The arrival of the first LNG cargo marks a significant milestone in Qatar's world-leading LNG business and reflects our successful collaboration with ExxonMobil.”
Facilitating the development of a global market for cleaner-burning natural gas, ExxonMobil is an industry leader in all aspects of the LNG value chain, including resource development, liquefaction, transportation, regasification terminals and gas marketing. In partnership with Qatar Petroleum, the company is employing new technology to build four of the largest LNG production facilities in the world, LNG regasification terminal projects in the UK, Italy and the US, as well as the industry's largest vessels to carry LNG to market. ExxonMobil is also participating in the development of LNG projects in Papua New Guinea and Australia.
