The first hydrogen refueling station in Turkey was inaugurated on Monday, 26 November 2012, in Istanbul, with the refueling and test-driving of a fuel cell car and boat.
Based on a grid-powered electrolyzer, the Golden Horn refueling station has a 65 kg daily hydrogen production and a storage capacity of up to 100 kg. It is able to supply both land (at 350 bar) and sea (at 200 bar) applications for a daily output corresponding to the refueling of 20 cars with an autonomy of 390 km for a 3.25 kg tank.
As Hyundai is announcing the production of up to 1000 hydrogen fuel cell cars per year by 2015, Mr. Topbaş foresaw, in his public address, the inevitable generalization of hydrogen energy technologies, which he called "the greatest discovery since that of the wheel".
Speaking for UNIDO-ICHET, Director Dr. James Wetherilt mentioned the unique character of this refueling facility as the only one worldwide "capable of servicing both marine and land vehicles". As UNIDO-ICHET approaches its closure at the end of year, Dr. Wetherilt expressed his belief that "in future years, ICHET's legacy will be seen as one that stimulated industry, universities, public authorities and governments alike both in Turkey and the world to understand the need to invest in hydrogen technologies in the manufacturing, domestic, policy and energy sectors".

The first hydrogen refueling station in Turkey was inaugurated on Monday, 26 November 2012, in Istanbul, with the refueling and test-driving of a fuel cell car and boat.The Golden Horn hydrogen refueling station was inaugurated last Monday in Istanbul in the presence of Istanbul Greater Municipality Mayor Mr. Kadir Topbaş. The event featured the refueling and test driving of a hydrogen fuel cell powered Hyundai ix35 as well a fuel cell boat designed by students from Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi.
Initiated in 2009 by the UNIDO International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies (UNIDO-ICHET) and Istanbul Greater Municipality (İBB), the Golden Horn refueling station has been manufactured by the German company Hydrogenics to specifications provided by UNIDO-ICHET.
