A California Road Map: The Commercialization of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles

The realization of fuel cell electric vehicles and supporting infrastructure requires a road map for investments in fuel cell electric vehicles and hydrogen fueling stations.

Zero-emission vehicles, including those powered by fuel cells, will play an important role in improving California’s air quality, reducing greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change, and increasing energy security while promoting a green economy. To get there, we need to invest in infrastructure, including an early network of hydrogen stations that will provide convenient and reliable fueling for the first customers that purchase fuel cell electric vehicles.

A California Road Map represents a collaborative and collective effort by stakeholders from industry, academia, non-governmental organizations and government to design a pragmatic road map for hydrogen station placement, enabling the deployment of tens of thousands of fuel cell electric vehicles in California. The technical report outlines the necessary steps for the vehicle and  infrastructure market as it progresses through pre-commercial (2012-2014) and early commercialization (2015-2017). It also incorporates the best available information from each of the stakeholders, including market-based assessments, models, and tools as well as professional experience with launching advanced vehicles and new infrastructure.
