Large Fuel Cell Headed to CCSU
To provide significant cost and energy savings

October 11, 2011   NEW BRITAIN, CT – Central Connecticut State University’s Sustainability Initiative gets a boost by a deal, struck last Friday, to bring a Connecticut-made fuel cell to its New Britain campus.
FuelCell Energy will maintain the plant under a multi-year service agreement.
The  plant will be located next to CCSU’s East Hall where the Department of Facilities Management is housed. Expected to be operational by December, the power plant will be the largest fuel cell at any New
England  college or university. The University’s power costs will be reduced by more than $100,000 a year due to the high efficiency of the power  generation process.
“This  fuel cell power plant represents a significant step towards achieving our aggressive goals for greenhouse gas reduction and improving energy efficiency,” said Jack Miller, president of CCSU.  “By providing both electricity and steam in such a clean and efficient manner, the plant will decrease our carbon emissions and help the University attain its sustainability goals.”
Since 2007, CCSU has strived to make significant advances in sustainability. Miller was among the first university presidents to sign the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment  (ACUPCC) to achieve climate neutrality. His President’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability,  consisting of faculty, staff and students set an ambitious goal to reduce by 50 percent CCSU’s  greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. Last year, CCSU was selected as an “exemplary Green institution” by the Princeton Review having demonstrated “an above average commitment to sustainability” in terms of campus infrastructure,  activities and initiatives. President Miller was applauded in the Princeton Review’s report for naming sustainability as “one of the top four priorities of the university.”
“Universities are an ideal market for our ultra-clean and efficient fuel cell power plants due to their power usage profile that requires baseload power, their desire for sustainable and environmentally friendly power generation, their need for energy security, and the energy reliability that on-site power generation provides,” commented Andy Skok, senior director of the Eastern Region, FuelCell Energy, Inc.

  • South Korean energy company Posco Power and Danbury-based FuelCell Energy will design a small-scale Direct Fuel Cell power plant to target the commercial applications market segment, particularly in Asia. Posco Power since October 2009 has had a licensing agreement with FuelCell Energy to assemble fuel cell stack modules from FuelCell components to make its 300-kilowatt DFC 300MA power plant sucn as this one installed at Yale University in New Haven.
